Wrestling for Girls: More Than a Sport
Wrestling teaches girls something that few other sports can: how to handle physical pressure with skill and composure. On the mat, there are no shortcuts and no spectators deciding the outcome — just technique, conditioning, and problem-solving in real time. The confidence that girls build through wrestling carries into school, relationships, and every challenge that comes after.
At Mustang Elite, girls train on the same mats, learn the same techniques, and are held to the same standards as every other wrestler in the room. Coaches treat every athlete as an athlete — not as a novelty. We practice folkstyle wrestling (the scholastic standard), which is the style used in middle school, high school, and college competition.
What Girls Gain from Wrestling
Families of girls who wrestle tell us the same things time and again. Here is what the sport delivers:
- Physical strength and body confidence — wrestling builds functional strength in a way that many girls have never experienced before
- Assertiveness — learning to be direct, to take action, and to hold your ground translates far beyond the mat
- Self-defense fundamentals — wrestling teaches safe, effective control of a physical situation
- Resilience — losing a match, regrouping, and coming back stronger is a lesson that shapes character
- Community — the girls wrestling community in Texas is tight-knit, supportive, and growing every year
- Competitive opportunity — USA Wrestling sanctioned girls-only brackets mean fair competition from the first tournament
How Girls Compete Through USA Wrestling
As a USA Wrestling affiliated club, Mustang Elite girls compete in officially sanctioned events with girls-only brackets organized by age and weight. This means your daughter is not competing against boys in tournaments — she is matched with other girls at the same developmental level, which makes competition meaningful and motivating.
Girls wrestling at the youth level has exploded in Texas over the past several years, and the tournament calendar reflects that. There are regular local and regional events throughout the season. For upcoming dates, check the events page. When girls are ready to level up, our competitive team track provides the structured tournament preparation they need.
A Welcoming Environment, Not an Afterthought
We know some families wonder whether their daughter will truly belong in a wrestling room. At Mustang Elite, the answer is yes — and we mean it. Girls have been part of our club since we founded in 2019, and their presence makes the entire room better. Coach Rick Ibarra and our coaching staff set clear expectations: every athlete, regardless of gender, is treated with the same respect and given the same coaching attention.
If your daughter is curious about wrestling but not sure she is ready to commit, come watch a practice first. Visit our Richardson location page for practice times and location details, or contact us with questions. We are always happy to talk with families before they sign up.
Affordable for Every Family
Mustang Elite is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — we are not here to maximize revenue, we are here to give kids in the Richardson area access to great wrestling. That means fees are kept well below the $90–$200+ per month that for-profit Dallas-area clubs charge.
Current registration fees are at /register. Girls who join the competitive track also need a USA Wrestling membership, which coaches walk families through at sign-up.
