Competitive Youth Wrestling in Dallas — Tournament Team

Competitive youth wrestling in the Dallas area does not require switching clubs or paying elite-academy prices. Mustang Elite Wrestling's competitive team gives experienced wrestlers a structured tournament pathway through USA Wrestling-sanctioned events, rigorous practice, and a direct pipeline into RISD's powerhouse high school programs. If your child is ready to compete — and win — this is the team.

The Tournament Pathway

Mustang Elite is a USA Wrestling affiliated club, which means our competitive wrestlers register through USA Wrestling and are eligible to compete at local, regional, and national-level tournaments. The season typically runs from fall through late spring, with tournament opportunities available most weekends for athletes who want them.

We do not require athletes to attend every tournament. Coaches work with families to build a competition calendar that fits the wrestler's goals and the family's schedule. Some athletes compete once a month; others compete nearly every weekend. Both approaches work — what matters is showing up to practice and putting in the reps.

For the full events calendar, including upcoming tournaments and our annual Mustang New Year Classic, check the events page. The New Year Classic is one of the most anticipated events on our calendar — a tournament hosted by Mustang Elite that draws clubs from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Practice Environment and Expectations

Competitive team practices operate at a higher intensity than our general youth program. Athletes are expected to attend practices consistently, push their conditioning, and engage seriously with technical instruction. That said, our character-first culture does not change at the competitive level — respect for coaches, teammates, and opponents is non-negotiable.

Practices are held at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, where athletes get mat time on quality equipment in a dedicated wrestling environment. Coach Rick Ibarra leads technical sessions personally, with an emphasis on the folkstyle fundamentals that translate directly to scholastic competition.

Wrestlers who commit to the competitive track see meaningful improvements in conditioning, reaction speed, and mat IQ over the course of a single season. The grind is real — and so are the results.

What the Competitive Program Develops

Beyond trophies and medals, our competitive athletes build skills and habits that last a lifetime:

  • Advanced folkstyle technique — tie-ups, scrambles, and chain wrestling that win matches at the scholastic level
  • Conditioning — competition-level cardiovascular fitness and strength built through structured drilling and live wrestling
  • Mental toughness under pressure — competing in front of crowds, in unfamiliar gyms, against opponents you have never seen before
  • Weight management awareness — healthy approaches to competing at an appropriate weight class, guided by coaches
  • Coachability — learning to absorb instruction between matches and make real-time adjustments
  • High school readiness — the technical and mental foundation that RISD coaches look for when evaluating incoming freshmen

The RISD High School Pipeline

One of the most compelling reasons to wrestle with Mustang Elite's competitive team is where it leads. Our club is the established feeder program for wrestling at J.J. Pearce, Berkner, Richardson, and Lake Highlands high schools in the Richardson Independent School District. RISD wrestling programs have a strong regional reputation, and athletes who come up through our club arrive at high school tryouts with a significant advantage over peers who are just starting.

If your child has ambitions to wrestle in high school — or even beyond — the competitive team is the clearest path. We have built deliberate relationships with RISD coaches and align our folkstyle curriculum with what those programs teach. Serious Wrestling, Nonprofit Prices

Elite youth wrestling clubs in the Dallas area can charge $90–$200+ per month. Our competitive team is part of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit structure — fees are kept as low as we can responsibly manage them, so families are not forced to choose between quality coaching and financial sanity.

Current fees are listed at /register. We also host USA Wrestling membership registration through the club — coaches walk new families through the process at sign-up.

Mustang New Year Classic

Each year, Mustang Elite Wrestling hosts the Mustang New Year Classic, a USA Wrestling sanctioned tournament that brings clubs from across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to Richardson. For our competitive wrestlers, it is a chance to compete on home turf in front of family and friends. For families new to the sport, it is a great first look at what youth wrestling competition looks like.

Check the events page for the next tournament date and registration details, or contact us if you have questions about competing or volunteering.

Frequently Asked Questions

We generally recommend at least one season of prior wrestling experience before joining the competitive track. Athletes who are brand new to the sport will be better served starting with our beginner program or general youth program first. If you are unsure, contact us — coaches can assess your child and recommend the right fit.
