What to Expect at a Mustang Elite Camp
Our camps and clinics follow the same coaching philosophy as our year-round program: technique-first, character-first, and athlete-appropriate intensity. A typical camp day includes a structured warm-up, focused technical instruction broken into short segments, drilling, and live wrestling in a supervised setting. The pace is fast, the energy is high, and kids leave tired in the best possible way.
Summer camps run over multiple consecutive days and are ideal for wrestlers who want to build a strong base before the fall season or accelerate their progress during the off-season. Skills clinics are typically shorter, single-day or weekend events focused on a specific area of the game — takedowns, escapes, mat control, or conditioning.
Both formats are open to kids grades K–8 regardless of experience level. Beginners get foundational instruction; experienced wrestlers work on technique refinement and competition prep. Coaches group athletes appropriately so every participant gets appropriate challenge and attention.
Why Camp Works
Concentrated time on the mat produces skill gains that regular weekly practices alone cannot match. Here is why families invest in summer camp and clinics:
- Volume of repetitions — more mat time in a week than a typical month of regular practice
- No distractions — camp athletes are focused on one thing, which accelerates learning
- New training partners — exposure to different body types, styles, and skill levels sharpens adaptability
- Confidence before the season — arriving at fall tryouts or regular season practice with fresh technique and fitness
- Fun — camps are energetic, social, and a genuinely good time for kids who love the sport
- Expert instruction — the same coaches who lead our year-round program run the camps
Summer Camp vs. Skills Clinics
Summer camps are multi-day programs — typically running several consecutive days or a full week — that give wrestlers an immersive experience. They cover a wide range of techniques, include conditioning work, and are ideal for athletes who want a significant jump in their overall skill level before fall.
Skills clinics are shorter, more targeted events. A clinic might run a single Saturday morning and focus specifically on leg attacks, or an afternoon dedicated to top-position control. Clinics are a great option for wrestlers who want to address a specific weakness without committing to a full camp.
Both types of programming are part of the Mustang Elite calendar, and both are priced in line with our nonprofit mission. View the events page for what is currently scheduled, or reach out if you want to be notified when the next session opens.
What to Bring to Camp
Pack these items for every camp or clinic session:
- Wrestling shoes (required for mat time — court shoes as a backup if you do not have them yet)
- Headgear and mouthguard
- Athletic shorts or compression shorts — no pockets
- Fitted t-shirt or rash guard
- Water bottle (refillable; hydration is critical in high-volume training)
- Lunch or snacks for multi-day camps (check session details for specifics)
- A notebook if your wrestler likes to write down techniques — coaches love athletes who review their notes
Check Events for Current Camp Dates
Camp and clinic scheduling varies by season. We do not maintain a fixed year-round camp calendar — sessions are planned and announced based on facility availability, coaching schedules, and demand. The most reliable way to stay informed is to bookmark the events page or contact us to be added to our notification list.
When camp registration opens, spots fill up. Families who reach out early get first notice. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our camp fees reflect the actual cost of running quality programming — not a profit target.
Camps as an Entry Point to the Club
Summer camp is one of the most popular ways new families find Mustang Elite. Kids who might be hesitant to commit to a full season often thrive in the lower-stakes camp environment and leave wanting more. Several of our current year-round athletes and competitive team members first came through a summer or holiday clinic.
If your child tries a camp and loves it, registering for the regular season is easy. Coaches can speak with you directly about which track — general youth, beginner, or competitive — is the best fit based on what they observed during camp. For questions about the club beyond camps, visit the about page or read through the FAQ.
