Compete Across North Texas
Mustang Elite Wrestling participates in USA Wrestling–sanctioned tournaments throughout the North Texas region and hosts the annual Mustang New Year Classic right here in Richardson.
USA Wrestling–Sanctioned Competition
Our athletes compete in USA Wrestling–sanctioned folkstyle events throughout the North Texas region. USA Wrestling is the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, and sanctioned events follow consistent rules, safety standards, and bracketing procedures — so wrestlers know what to expect wherever they compete.
Competitive participation is optional, not required, and athletes progress into the tournament circuit at a pace that fits their development and readiness. Our competitive program prepares wrestlers who want to pursue tournament experience.
Mustang New Year Classic
Each year, Mustang Elite Wrestling hosts the Mustang New Year Classic— a USA Wrestling–sanctioned youth folkstyle tournament held at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, TX. The tournament draws youth wrestlers from across the region and showcases the talent developing inside the Mustang program.
Dates for each season's Mustang New Year Classic are announced as the season approaches. Check our SportsEngine portal, the USA Wrestling website, or contact us for current-season dates.
What Tournaments Are Like for First-Timers
If your child has never been to a wrestling tournament, the experience can feel a little fast-paced at first — but most families find it exciting and well-organized once they know what to expect. Here is a general overview:
- Weigh-ins— wrestlers check in and weigh in before competition to be placed in the correct weight class. Arrive early and follow event-specific check-in instructions.
- Brackets by age and weight— athletes are grouped by age division and weight class, so kids compete against others of similar size and experience level. Bracket formats (single elimination, round-robin, etc.) vary by tournament.
- Multiple matches— depending on the bracket, wrestlers typically get several matches throughout the day. Our coaches are with athletes in the corner for each bout.
- Family-friendly atmosphere— tournaments are community events. Families cheer from the bleachers while multiple matches run simultaneously on adjacent mats.
